Expert Advice on
Choosing the right rug |
The size of your rug is one of the most fundamental decisions to decide upon. If it is the wrong size, it can cause a room look cluttered or small. Too small and you will not receive much benefit from it. Rugs generally come in standard sizes, which are approximately: |
|
- Small: From three feet by five feet (90cm x 150cm) to four feet by six feet (120cm x 180cm)
- Medium: Up to eight feet by five feet (240cm x 150cm)
- Large: Up to eleven feet (330cm)
- Extra Large: Above eleven feet (330cm)

As a rule of thumb, small rugs are best for highlighting smaller pieces of furniture. for example, beside a bed or under a small coffee table. Whereas larger rugs are better for dining rooms, lounge areas and other open spaces.
Remember that a rug slightly too large can often be tucked away under furniture. You can check the size of rug you want before buying it, by laying sheets of newspaper where you plan to have your rug.
When you are happy with the size of area measure the size and buy a rug the same. When placing your rug, check that it won't obstruct any doors. Thick luxurious rugs are lovely to walk on, but few doors will have the clearance to freely swing over them.
Remember that your rug will draw attention to the part of the room in which it is placed. This can change the focus of the room, so when you are using newspaper to check the size, you can also use this method to see how your rug will change the focus of the room.
